In this 3-hour beginner-friendly class, students will assemble and solder a Christmas Pickle that can be used as a stained glass ornament or suncatcher. Participants will learn the basics of lead-came construction, basic soldering techniques, including the use of tools and techniques unique to the art of stained glass. Host Deke Cameron will have an assortment of pre-cut glass shapes for students to construct their Christmas pickle in a variety of colors and textures.

The Christmas pickle is a tradition dating back to the 1800s. On Christmas morning, the first person to find the pickle ornament on the tree gets something special! It could be good fortune in the new year, or another present. Whether you know the tradition or not, the pickle adds fun and whimsy to holiday celebrations.

Bring nothing and leave with your very own work of stained glass art! No experience is necessary and students of all skill-levels are encouraged to participate. Ages 14+; minors must have the supervision of a parent or guardian who is also participating in the class. Personal protective equipment like gloves and glasses are provided.

Safety warning: This workshop can expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

This project is supported in part by an Elevate Grant of Austin Arts, Culture, Music, & Entertainment.
