By combining familiar elements like stone, rock, and dirt, and altering their context through light and digital interfaces, something unfamiliar and ethereal comes to life. Clarke’s exhibition presents liminal spaces that seek to create meaning in the tension between despondent and vibrant moments in one’s life. Sans Land, emanating from the artist’s experience in the landscapes of the American West, sits in the gap between belonging and the unfamiliar, and invites the viewer to accept and embrace that tension. From the artist:

“Unfamiliarity and novelty cloud my vision against a rivaling feeling of belonging and warmth. Barren but vibrant, hard rock landscapes both communicate its hostile and untamable nature, yet offer a subtle embrace. The tension of these landscapes are similar to the tension of living - truly living.”

Marcus “Delmar” Clarke is a transmedia artist who is fixated on creating liminal spaces by combining mundane materials like dirt, rocks, cinder blocks, and construction materials, and giving them an ethereal quality through light and sound. His faith (and doubts within that faith) drives his practice, revolving around the pursuit of life to the full in mind, body, and spirit. He studied at Pratt Institute and later graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2019. He currently lives in Austin, Texas, and is on the cusp of a move to Salt Lake City, Utah.

Sans Land will be on view at the Contracommon Gallery from September 13th – October 15th, 2021. The gallery is open to the public Fridays through Sundays from 12pm – 6pm, and by appointment Monday through Thursday. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 25th from 7-10pm, and is free and open to the public. For more information, appointments or donations, please email contact@contracommon.org.
